When I'm working on my website, whether it be designing a page in Photoshop or typing away in Notepad++, I like to listen to old Nintendo music mixes. Being gen Z (born in the middle of the 00s), I grew up with the 7th gen consoles, so the Wii and DS tend to be what I gravitate towards.
Maybe it's because the Wii is turning 20 years old this year, which makes me feel like my bones are going to crumble, but the music makes me...sad.
Many of the ambient background tracks of the Wii channels preloaded on the system were composed in minor keys, so that sad tone to them already existed in 2006 when the Wii launched. I think that the minor key evokes more emotions from me now, when I think about how the Wii is no longer the current console, and how it's glory days are far behind us, in the olden years of the late 2000s.
Ever since WiiConnect24 shut down in 2013, the News and Forecast channels no longer function in their stock state. The News Channel specifically has a particularly melancholic melody >> that plays when the channel attempts to load news from over the internet. This song plays any time you enter the channel now. I think it's a very fitting choice of music, considering the state it is now in. A channel that is no longer functional, playing an ambient tune that's just as depressing. I think it's kind of poetic, in a way.
